Photos by Avonn\u00e9 Photography (left) and Laura Briggs Photo<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Over the last two years, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillymag.com\/philadelphia-wedding\/philadelphia-weddings-during-coronavirus-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wedding industry<\/a> has changed \u2014 at least for now \u2014 as a result of the pandemic. Couples who had to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillymag.com\/philadelphia-wedding\/2020\/12\/22\/philadelphia-pandemic-weddings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cancel or postpone<\/a> larger soirees found solace in still being able to celebrate in small ways, as Philadelphia-area micro-weddings and elopements became the parties du jour. Some couples even realized it was all they ultimately needed \u2014 and, perhaps, secretly wanted from the start. Sure, we\u2019ll always love large soirees, and we were thrilled that many local duos had the opportunity to party in bigger ways this year, but the Philadelphia micro-weddings and elopements of 2020 and 2021 have also given folks a greater appreciation of the little moments and helped couples realize that it\u2019s more than OK to want a cozier ceremony or reception (or both). Photo by Anthony Page Photography<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>The couple:<\/strong> Brittney Kelsey<span class=\"s1\"> and Dwayne Johnson<\/span><br \/><strong>The pivot: <\/strong>A 200-person wedding at the Lakeview Pavilion in Massachusetts in April 2021 became a 40-guest micro-wedding filled with purple and orange hues at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillymag.com\/weddings\/philadelphia\/wedding-venues\/independence-visitor-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Liberty View<\/a> on October 10, 2020.<br \/><strong>The result: <\/strong>\u201cEveryone was in quarantine due to the lockdown, so the wedding was also like a mini reunion. Our guests kept saying, \u2018This was much-needed,\u2019\u201d says Brittney. \u201cWe were able to have a great wedding despite the changes. Photo by MLE Pictures<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>The couple:\u00a0<\/strong>Erika Hineman\u00a0and\u00a0Michael Stobbe<br \/><strong>The pivot: <\/strong>A 180-person celebration at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillymag.com\/weddings\/philadelphia\/wedding-venues\/the-reeds-at-shelter-haven\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reeds at Shelter Haven<\/a> in June 2020 became a 59-guest micro-wedding with a California-desert-meets-Jersey-Shore theme at the same location on September 6, 2020.<br \/><strong>The result:\u00a0<\/strong>Because Michael\u2019s mother had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer, the couple was determined to keep that second date. \u201cIt was important for us to move forward with the wedding in whatever way, shape or form,\u201d says Erika. Photo by Avonn\u00e9 Photography<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>The couple:\u00a0<\/strong>Jewel Lester\u00a0and\u00a0Ameer Sherard<br \/><strong>The pivot:\u00a0<\/strong>A 175-person fete at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillymag.com\/weddings\/philadelphia\/wedding-venues\/front-palmer-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Front &amp; Palmer<\/a> in October 2021 ultimately became a 24-guest moody, glam micro-wedding at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillymag.com\/weddings\/philadelphia\/wedding-venues\/river-house-at-odettes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">River House at Odette\u2019s<\/a> on March 13, 2021.<br \/><strong>The result:<\/strong> The couple faced a number of challenges that led them to March 2021, including the passing of Jewel\u2019s grandmother before the original wedding date and Ameer testing positive for COVID a week before the fourth change of plans. Photo by Sweetwater Portraits<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>The couple: <\/strong>Daisy Carter and Andrew Berta<br \/><strong>The pivot:\u00a0<\/strong>A 215-person ceremony at St. Francis Xavier Church and reception at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillymag.com\/weddings\/philadelphia\/wedding-venues\/kimmel-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kimmel Center<\/a> in May 2020 became a family-only ceremony at the same church and 45-guest wildflower-filled tented reception at the bride\u2019s parents\u2019 backyard in Malvern on July 25, 2020.<br \/><strong>The result: <\/strong>Daisy admits that making it through their original date \u2014 without a wedding \u2014 was difficult, but the couple found a way to honor it. She baked her own cake from scratch, and she and Andrew staged the night that would\u2019ve been. She wore a veil (a piece of gauze on a headband) and a white dress. They had dinner, a first dance and cut the cake. As for the actual Big Day? It exceeded their original plan, they say: \u201cOur wedding was everything we ever hoped for,\u201d says Daisy. \u201cIt was more intimate and full of our favorite people, so we don\u2019t feel like we need to have another larger celebration. Photo by Brittney Raine<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>The couple:\u00a0<\/strong>Kelly Wilson and Greg Nealis<br \/><strong>The pivot:\u00a0<\/strong>A 170-person wedding on November 21, 2020 at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillymag.com\/weddings\/philadelphia\/wedding-venues\/fame\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAME<\/a> became a 20-person Philadelphia micro-wedding with an enchanting theme \u2014 the bride wanted the decor to feel like it was pulled from a witch\u2019s house \u2013 on November 19, 2020 at the same venue.<br \/><strong>The result:\u00a0<\/strong>The couple decided to truncate their guest list over the summer as the pandemic progressed. But Kelly had secretly always wanted a more intimate wedding. \u201cWhen Greg suggested cutting to the wedding party and parents, I was thrilled he felt the same way,\u201d says Kelly. \u201cWe shook on it and never looked back.\u201d The wedding date was a bigger issue \u2014 shortly before the Big Day, the city announced new guidelines that prevented indoor events.
