{"id":4827,"date":"2021-11-10T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-10T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/espacestudio.ca\/inside-aliya-jasmines-dreamy-kenyan-elopement\/"},"modified":"2021-11-10T03:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-11-10T08:00:00","slug":"inside-aliya-jasmines-dreamy-kenyan-elopement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/espacestudio.ca\/en\/inside-aliya-jasmines-dreamy-kenyan-elopement\/","title":{"rendered":"Inside Aliya Jasmine&#8217;s Dreamy Kenyan Elopement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Though it was not originally in the cards when they started planning their wedding in 2019, a wildly romantic elopement in Kenya turned out to be the ultimate dream day for <a href=\"https:\/\/thekit.ca\/style\/wedding-dress-toronto-aliya-jasmine-sovani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aliya Jasmine<\/a>, Canadian TV host, environmental journalist and head of production at LILI Media, and Mike Bradwell, former Toronto Argonauts wide receiver.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The California-based couple was in the midst of putting together a big, beautiful Malibu wedding, but with COVID, they were forced to cancel and rebook it\u2026three times. \u201cBecause of the pandemic and border restrictions for travel, it wasn\u2019t happening,\u201d Aliya says. \u201cA party meant to bring so much happiness became stressful and heartbreaking. We decided to cut our losses, and use the money we had left in our wedding budget to take our <a href=\"https:\/\/thekit.ca\/style\/what-to-wear-on-your-honeymoon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">honeymoon<\/a>\u2026and elope while we were travelling!\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_223928\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-223928\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"600\"  src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/espacestudio.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Inside-Aliya-Jasmines-Dreamy-Kenyan-Elopement.jpg?resize=700%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" data- class=\"wp-image-223928 size-full lazyload\"\/><noscript><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-223928 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/espacestudio.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Inside-Aliya-Jasmines-Dreamy-Kenyan-Elopement.jpg?resize=700%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"600\"  \/><\/noscript><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-223928\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Maganga Mwagogo <\/span>Aliya made her own bridal bouquet and included their late dog George Hamilton\u2019s tags to pay tribute to their beloved pet.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Aliya and Mike booked a trip to Kenya, packed their wedding attire, and decided to go with the flow and get married somewhere along the way. \u201cWe were so exhausted from everything we had been through; we couldn\u2019t plan one more thing. Mike recognized Aliya from her TV gig as an MTV News host, but he pretended he didn\u2019t know who she was. \u201cHe introduced himself as an engineer, which is actually what he did in football off-season,\u201d Aliya says. \u201cWe got into a very heated debate at the bar over NHL hockey playoff standings, and ended up exchanging numbers. The first text he ever sent me was to ask me out for a drink, and chirp my favourite team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With an aggressive work travel schedule taking her to New York and Los Angeles every other weekend, Aliya says it was difficult to see Mike more than twice a month. \u201cMike wanted more, and was very persistent. He invited me to the 100th Anniversary Grey Cup Championship game in Toronto, which he was playing in. When the Argos won, and he had a bunch of microphones in his face, he introduced me as his girlfriend. Mike proposed during a trip with Aliya\u2019s family to Spain. \u201cI was there to take engagement photos of my sister and her now husband, who is from Sevilla,\u201d Aliya says. \u201cWe were in the most beautiful location, with historic architecture and amazing gardens. After the shoot, we were looking around and taking it all in when Mike appeared in front of me, down on one knee, holding a ring box. He spoke with my dad before the trip about proposing and when we got back from the trip, my dad gave him a high-five and declared \u2018Touchdown!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_223923\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-223923\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"600\"  src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/espacestudio.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/1652515612_981_Inside-Aliya-Jasmines-Dreamy-Kenyan-Elopement.jpg?resize=700%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" data- class=\"wp-image-223923 size-full lazyload\"\/><noscript><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-223923 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/espacestudio.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/1652515612_981_Inside-Aliya-Jasmines-Dreamy-Kenyan-Elopement.jpg?resize=700%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"600\"  \/><\/noscript><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-223923\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Maganga Mwagogo <\/span>The pre-wedding scene was beautifully serene. \u201cThe earth tones of Africa\u2019s natural landscape coloured all the imagery around us\u2014that was our wedding d\u00e9cor story,\u201d Aliya says.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On their wedding\/honeymoon adventure in Kenya, the couple said I do in their open-air room at Sasaab, a luxury tented camp resort located just outside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samburu.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Samburu National Reserve<\/a>. \u201cEverything was perfect,\u201d says Aliya. \u201cIt was so low maintenance: I did my own hair and makeup, and our safari guides officiated. We had a blessing ceremony, and then were surprised by a private bonfire and barbeque in the bush for our reception. He was recommended to Aliya by her fashion-writer friend Mosha Lundstr\u00f6m Halbert, who had previously worked with Mwagogo at <em>Vogue<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Though Aliya and Mike were far from family and friends, their day was filled with heartfelt touches that made the couple feel as though those closest to them were there. \u201cMy family managed to arrange a bottle of champagne waiting for us at dinner,\u201d Aliya says. \u201cWhen we saw the card, it brought us to tears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_223915\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-223915\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"600\"  src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/espacestudio.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/1652515613_627_Inside-Aliya-Jasmines-Dreamy-Kenyan-Elopement.jpg?resize=700%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" data- class=\"wp-image-223915 size-full lazyload\"\/><noscript><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-223915 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/espacestudio.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/1652515613_627_Inside-Aliya-Jasmines-Dreamy-Kenyan-Elopement.jpg?resize=700%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"600\"  \/><\/noscript><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-223915\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Maganga Mwagogo <\/span>The couple enjoyed an intimate reception after their ceremony, which included a special first dance. \u201cDuring dinner, Mike pulled his iPhone out and we danced in the wild to Elton John\u2019s \u2018Tiny Dancer.\u2019 It was a dream!\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Aliya and Mike also paid tribute to their beloved late dog, George Hamilton. \u201cHe passed away before we got to our wedding, and I always wanted him to be a part of the day,\u201d she explains. \u201cI brought his collar with me to Africa. I created a <a href=\"https:\/\/thekit.ca\/weddings\/trends-and-service\/wedding-flowers-trends-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bouquet<\/a> from the flowers that came with our room service breakfast that morning, and tied George\u2019s tags around it using white ribbons from our Tiffany &amp; Co. wedding ring boxes. My earrings were handmade by a woman from the Samburu tribe. We went to Kenya knowing we wanted to elope but decided we would choose when and where to do our vows on a whim, whenever it felt right.
