(WETM) \u2013 For many people, the 1972 flood brings back images of destruction and devastation. But one Elmira couple remembers that weekend for another, more joyous, reason, as they prepare to celebrate properly 50 years later.<\/p>\n<p>Sally and Doug Davis were married on June 24, 1972, one day after the worst of the Hurricane Agnes flood waters washed through Elmira. They met three years prior and spent 18 months preparing for their big day.<\/p>\n<p>They didn\u2019t think twice about the forecast for that weekend. \u201cSomebody showed us the Farmers Almanac, and it said on the 24th of June, 1972, \u2018It rains, it pours until the river roars.\u2019 And we just said okay\u201d, Doug recalled. The soon-to-be-newlyweds assumed the hurricane would come and go by the time of their wedding.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytwintiers.com\/news-cat\/top-stories\/corning-museum-of-glass-features-exhibits-impacted-by-1972-flood-for-50th-anniversary\/?ipid=promo-link-block1\" class=\"promo-link__link\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\tCorning Museum of Glass features exhibits impacted by 1972 flood for 50th anniversary\t<\/a><br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>But when the waters left Elmira in pieces, washing out their wedding venue of Grace Episcopal Church on West Church Street, Sally said their reaction was just \u201cStress\u201d. So they planned to cancel. <\/p>\n<p>The community was suffering. Doug\u2019s parents hadn\u2019t yet arrived from Westchester, N.Y. Many friends weren\u2019t able to drive into Elmira. And any guests from Elmira\u2019s southside were effectively stranded, with only one lane of traffic open on the Main Street Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>But the minister put a stop to the couple\u2019s doubts.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cFather Hale said, \u2018Not doing that. We need a bright light in all of this darkness\u2019,\u201d Sally said.<\/p>\n<p>So in less than 48 hours, the wedding party improvised a new ceremony at a funeral home a few blocks north which had avoided the flood waters. \u201cIt was gorgeous,\u201d Sally recalled. \u201cI really think my father, in his heart, was quite happy that it ended up that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytwintiers.com\/news-cat\/the-clemens-center-theatre-recalls-rebuilding-on-the-eve-of-hurricane-agnes\/?ipid=promo-link-block2\" class=\"promo-link__link\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\tThe Clemens Center Theatre recalls rebuilding on the Eve of Hurricane Agnes\t<\/a><br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>Sally\u2019s father walked her down a staircase instead of the aisle. The ceremony took place in front of a marble fireplace instead of an altar. But the day was no less special.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/espacestudio.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/True-love-weathers-the-storm-Elmira-couple-remembers-wedding-amid.jpg?resize=345%2C422&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1080929\" width=\"345\" height=\"422\"  \/><figcaption>Doug and Sally Davis on their wedding day, June 24, 1972<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe beginning part of it was a blur to me,\u201d Doug said. \u201cI was just \u2018Okay, you know, here we go.\u2019 But when I saw her come down, I could relax.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Unable to reach their planned reception at Hilltop Inn, the food was donated to evacuees in the area. Their five-tier cake was replaced by one in a foil pan, and guests drank out of small paper cups. And their friends who couldn\u2019t make it from Binghamton still had \u201cone heck of good party\u201d of their own, Doug said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were standing in front of the marble fireplace, and when Father Hale pronounced us husband and wife, all of a sudden the sun came through the stained glass window and hit our heads,\u201d Sally said. \u201cMy mother said it was just beautiful and unbelievable and a sign. And then she also said, \u2018Don\u2019t ever try to get married again anywhere because we can\u2019t top this one.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytwintiers.com\/news-cat\/top-stories\/approaching-the-50th-anniversary-of-hurricane-agnes\/?ipid=promo-link-block3\" class=\"promo-link__link\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\tHow did Hurricane Agnes form and progress in 1972?\t<\/a><br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>The story of their wedding amid the destruction of the flood made it into newspapers across New York and across the country. And later that summer, after helping with cleanup for a few months, the couple moved to Georgia. But they vividly recalled the devastation left behind after the flood waters receded.<\/p>\n<p>They didn\u2019t move back to Elmira until 2007. And on June 24, 2022, they\u2019ll celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at Hilltop Inn with \u201cthe reception it should\u2019ve been\u201d and as many friends and family as possible.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI still can\u2019t believe it\u2019s been 50 years. But we\u2019ve had some incredible luck, happiness, travels,\u201d Doug said. \u201cWe have three beautiful kids; we have seven beautiful grandkids. And they\u2019re all converging up here on the 24th.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, there are changes. Members of the original wedding party have scattered around the world. Doug\u2019s best man passed away 10 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we\u2019re going to party,\u201d he said, not letting the devastating memories dampen the mood. The Davis\u2019 son will renew their vows with their daughters by their side and Sally\u2019s mother, who is 97 and a half years old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a way to celebrate. 50 doesn\u2019t happen to everybody anymore.
