CEO Agnishwar Jayaprakash tells us about the company\u2019s roadmap to redefining delivery service in India<br \/>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><h2 class=\"intro\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Chennai-based_Garuda_Aerospaces_founder_and_CEO_Agnishwar_Jayaprakash_tells_us_about_the_companys_roadmap_to_redefining_delivery_service_in_India-2\"><\/span>\nChennai-based Garuda Aerospace\u2019s founder and CEO Agnishwar Jayaprakash tells us about the company\u2019s roadmap to redefining delivery service in India<br \/>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"content-body-65575324\">\n<p>In the increasingly cut-throat war between delivery apps, Swiggy recently\u00a0unveiled what could be their most effective weapon yet: a partnership with Chennai-based drone startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/tamil-nadu\/chennai-based-drone-startup-to-set-up-plant-in-malaysia\/article65554112.ece\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Garuda Aerospace<\/a>\u00a0to deliver groceries in Bengaluru by deploying drones. Garuda, which recently welcomed cricketer Mahendra Singh\u00a0Dhoni on-board as investor and brand ambassador, is among the leading aersopace firms in India to spearhead drone food delivery \u2014 another is Skyeair Mobility, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/cities\/bangalore\/swiggy-to-run-pilot-project-with-drones-replenishing-grocery-stocks\/article65378358.ece\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">drones will be delivering food for Swiggy<\/a> in Delhi-NCR.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Agnishwar Jayaprakash, founder and CEO of Garuda Aerospace, says he wants to introduce the idea of \u201cgroceries at your doorstep in seven\u00a0to 10 \u00a0minutes\u201d in India. \u201cIf you are to measure the quickest time and the fastest route between two points, the result is always a straight line,\u201d he says, adding \u201cBut when one travels on road, it\u2019s a roundabout route. Exactly there comes the viability of goods delivery through drone technology.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The drones, customised to carry grocery items, have now found another use. They are now carrying relief items and helping deliver aid to flood-hit Assam.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the only marker of his firm\u2019s success, however. Explaining why India is a preferred supplier,\u00a0he says, \u201cthe firmware and the software work is done securely here, so there are no concerns about information security\u201d.\u00a0Garuda Aerospace has supplied drones to the likes of L&amp;T and Adani, besides collaborating over various projects with Wipro, Intel, Tata Voltas, IIT Madras,\u00a0IIT Roorkee,\u00a0Delhi metro\u2019s CISF unit, Varanasi smart city and ISRO, etc.. The drones are involved in a wide range of jobs, including solar panel cleaning, warehouse management, spraying of fertilizers, seeding fields and\u00a0stringing transmission lines.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrently we have a team of 120 permanent pilots, and about 400 more are on contract basis,\u201d says Agnishwar adding they are currently in the process of raising a $30 million fund for series A round at a valuation of $250 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have over 100 active projects going on right now,\u201d he states, adding, \u201cWe had 24% profit margin last year, which is rare for a startup. Our forecast is to\u00a0have manufactured and sold 40,000-50,000 drones\u00a0by the end of the financial year 2022-23.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sub_head\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Customised_for_kirana\"><\/span>\nCustomised for kirana<br \/>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Agnishwar states, \u201cthe actual operations will start in the middle of July. Right now, we are in the planning stage. From pickup point (seller-run dark stores) to customers\u2019 location \u2014 we are chalking out the easiest and fastest routes.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"img-full-width align-left \"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/espacestudio.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/A-look-at-Garuda-the-drone-startup-behind-Swiggys-air-delivery.jpg?w=1300&#038;ssl=1\" data-original=\"https:\/\/espacestudio.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/A-look-at-Garuda-the-drone-startup-behind-Swiggys-air-delivery.jpg\" alt=\"A Garuda drone modified to store and ferry groceries\" title=\"A Garuda drone modified to store and ferry groceries\" class=\" lazy\"  \/><\/p>\n<p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Garuda_drone_modified_to_store_and_ferry_groceries_Photo_Credit_Special_arrangement\"><\/span>\nA Garuda drone modified to store and ferry groceries<br \/>\n| Photo Credit: Special arrangement<br \/>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>But how would an agricultural drone be useful for Swiggy\u2019s Instamart service?\u00a0A UAV engineer at Garuda Aerospace explains, \u201cTo make grocery delivery through drones possible, the tank where the fertilizer usually is stored, the tube, the nozzles and the motor cables will be taken off and a box made of composite fibre would be placed there instead.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can carry loads up to anywhere between five kilograms to 20 kilograms and cover a distance of 30-40 kilometres\u00a0with a speed of 60 kilometres per hour,\u201d reveals Agnishwar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sub_head\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Flight_of_ambition\"><\/span>\nFlight of ambition<br \/>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Explaining how he got interested in drones, Agnishwar says, \u201cIt was during my time at the United Nations in 2017-2018, when I was working under former Assistant Secretary-General of the UN, Lakshmi Puri, that I observed how in developing countries like India, the adoption of drone technology is very slow. They were very capital intensive, and there were too many regulatory norms. Besides, people lacked the expertise to maintain them. Application of drones was largely limited to shooting films, wedding videography and photography.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 31-year-old CEO-founder shares how his association with the United Nations played a vital role\u00a0in setting up\u00a0his drone start-up.\u00a0\u201c\u00a0I\u00a0had the opportunity to study\u00a0a lot of case studies and impact reports during my time at the United Nations.\u00a0I came to understand\u00a0that\u00a0developing nations required disruptive and emerging technologies like drones\u00a0which\u00a0could disrupt several multi-billion\u00a0dollar sectors like precision agriculture\u00a0tech.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He began to ideate on \u201chow drones could serve multiple purposes, if well-equipped. That\u2019s what gave me the idea to fit drones with magnetometers, sensors, nozzles, tanks and all that is required to make it efficiently provide a varied range of services. This makes things move much faster and it is cost-effective, much more efficient and it helps cut down on costs for market players,\u201d\u00a0says the young entrepreneur.<\/p>\n<p>Garuda Aerospace\u00a0was\u00a0incubated in 2015 at Agni College of Technology in Chennai, where Agnishwar is currently vice-chairman.\u00a0\u201cWe\u00a0started\u00a0developing drones,\u00a0putting a lot of\u00a0focus on\u00a0wildlife, agriculture and sustainability, which\u00a0got\u00a0us\u00a0recognised by the UN as one of the top 10 socio-economic innovations\u00a0in 2016.\u00a0Since then,\u00a0we have been working with the\u00a0UN\u00a0on a project-by-project basis,\u201d says\u00a0the alumnus of the\u00a0Queens University of Charlotte, USA, <i>.<\/i>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The drone start-up currently has a manufacturing unit in Manesar. The company is going to expand its R&amp;D facility, which is located inside Agni College of Technology, to house a drone manufacturing unit.\u00a0\u201cThis unit will manufacture 30 different kinds of drones\u00a0for diverse applications, including grocery delivery,\u201d\u00a0says Agnishwar.<\/p>\n<p>Stating that there is a rising demand for drones now, he says, \u201cHowever, the unit economics still need to work out for service providers like us. Right now, my company has the required manpower and technology to meet market demands.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The biggest challenge, he says is a dearth of skilled labour to man the drones. \u201cBut the job of a drone pilot is a lucrative one and we are on our way to make youngsters realise this,\u201d says Agnishwar, adding, \u201cA drone pilot can make anywhere between\u00a0\u20b920,000 and \u20b980,000. It can reach even \u20b91 lakh, depending on the skills of pilot. Our aspiration is to\u00a0create an entrepreneurship route \u2014 one drone should create at least three jobs: drone pilot, data processor and drone maintenance professional.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As for why Garuda\u2019s drones will be used for grocery delivery in\u00a0Bengaluru and not in Chennai, despite Garuda\u2019s strong base in Chennai, Agnishwar says, \u201cIt is entirely Swiggy\u2019s decision. We will start with Bangalore, but opportunities will always be open for us to provide our service in other cities too. Right now, trial runs are on. Real operations will commence around the middle of next month.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although Garuda is based in Chennai, Agnishwar stresses, \u201cWe have presence in 26 cities.
