\nWhen event planner and stylist DeYandr\u00e9 Thaxton<\/a> first asked Vishal Reniguntala<\/a> out on OkCupid in 2017, he said no\u2014but she took it as a good sign. \u201cWe\u2019d bonded over a shared love for basketball. I invited him to Ice Cube\u2019s BIG3 Tournament but he was helping his older sister move that weekend<\/a>,\u201d she remembers. \u201cIt was already a good sign that he cared about his family.\u201d Instead, their first date was a visit to the Takashi Murakami exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago<\/a>, and Vishal presented yet another good sign<\/a>. \u201cHe showed up wearing bright red pants\u2014I loved it!\u201d DeYandr\u00e9 says. \u201cDespite having a color deficiency, Vishal loves color.\u201d\n<\/p>\n \nIn fact, color would become a baseline for their creativity-infused relationship\u2014and eventually, their wedding. \u201cOur first date<\/a> was the only time I asked for a second date during<\/em> the first,\u201d Vishal remembers. \u201cI was excited to see her again, and I had a feeling it was mutual.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n \nThat was in July. By September 2017, they were official<\/a>. By early 2020, Vishal knew for sure that DeYandr\u00e9 was the one. \u201cI knew I was going to ask her to marry me for most of 2020,\u201d he remembers. \u201cWe went to Boston for the first time in a year for Thanksgiving<\/a>, myself staying for three weeks, DeYandr\u00e9 staying for six. I asked her mother for her hand in marriage early in the trip.\u201d His plan was to look for a ring when he got back to Chicago and propose after Christmas<\/a>\u2014but after nearly a year of knowing, \u201cI decided I didn\u2019t want to wait. I wanted to propose<\/a> before I flew out,\u201d he says. \u201cThe only thing missing was an engagement ring<\/a>.\u201d He borrowed DeYandr\u00e9\u2019s mom\u2019s car and headed to the mall, where he bought a simple silver ring. \u201cI was super nervous, second-guessing<\/a> if my plan was good enough, if the timing was right, and if she\u2019d be okay with this \u2018placeholder\u2019 engagement ring.\u201d\n<\/p>\n \nShe was. When Vishal got down on one knee<\/a>, DeYandr\u00e9 replied with a resounding \u201cyes\u201d and Champagne was popped. \u201cIt was such a special moment, especially with my entire family<\/a> present,\u201d she recalls. Vishal flew out the next day as planned, and \u201cwe spent the next few weeks giggling over FaceTime long distance.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n \nThe duo spent a couple months monitoring changing Covid restrictions\u2014and mostly thinking they\u2019d have to get married just the two of them\u2014until they decided on a micro wedding<\/a> at a gorgeous urban farm in Chicago. \u201cI had worked with Big Delicious Planet<\/a> in 2018 to cater a conference I coordinated,\u201d the bride says. \u201cIn our search for venues BDP came up. We visited the venue in March 2021 and had to use our imagination to envision what the scene would look like in September.\u201d They booked the venue regardless and by springtime<\/a>, knew they\u2019d made the right call. \u201cAt our check-in visit, the farm<\/a> was coming to life with bunnies hopping, butterflies dancing, and bees buzzing around flowers,\u201d Vishal remembers. \u201cIt felt like a scene from a Disney<\/a> movie. The location felt significant too: BDP is located in the West Town neighborhood, which is coincidentally where we both first lived upon moving to Chicago.\u201d DeYandr\u00e9 adds: \u201cWe\u2019re city-dwelling nature lovers, so Big Delicious Planet<\/a> really captured that aspect of our personality.\u201d\n<\/p>\n \nOver six months of planning, the couple turned to friends and family for help and put their own unique stamp on the details, decor, and a host of cultural traditions<\/a> that paid homage to both of their heritages. They grounded a deep plum line with bright abstract shapes in the background.\u201d She continues: \u201cWorking with our best friends<\/a> on our invite design<\/a> was the easiest part of planning. During a time of isolation, it was so fun to have double dates with our favorite people and create something so beautiful.\u201d Rohner Press<\/a> letterpressed the artwork onto double-sided square cards. \u201cWith the majority of our guests tuning into the ceremony virtually<\/a>, every interaction with our wedding needed to feel special,\u201d\u00a0 the bride adds. “We wanted to send our loved ones a work of art in the mail.\u201d\n<\/p>\n \nThe invitation<\/a> set the tone for a bold event infused with color from start to finish. \u201cOur scheme was orange, plum, pink, green, periwinkle blue, and yellow,\u201d DeYandr\u00e9 says. \u201cWe were inspired by the transition from summer<\/a> to fall, astrology, abstract shapes found in nature, and the beauty of plant life that sprouts between the cracks of a city sidewalk. We selected color swatches from the floral samples created by our friend and florist at Thistle + Plume<\/a>, Sabrina Severns. We wanted big and bold colors\u2014colors that Vishal can see.\u201d\n<\/p>\n Photo by Emily Melissa Photo<\/p>\n <\/span> \n\u201cMy vision was to look and feel natural<\/a>, and my beauty look came together organically,\u201d DeYandr\u00e9 says. \u201cI\u2019m truly a clothing gal, so I really trusted my sister-in-law with my hairstyle and Sandy Thinnes<\/a> with my makeup. Both are holistic artists who made the journey easeful and relaxing.\u201d During their wedding trial conversations, Sandy and DeYandr\u00e9 decided on a bold lip. \u201cShe blended RMS lipstick<\/a> in Jezebel with MAC lipstick<\/a> in Mangrove to create a beautiful warm red lip. I loved that she incorporated natural products into my look.\u201d\n<\/p>\n Photo by Emily Melissa Photo<\/p>\n <\/span> \n\u201cI wanted color<\/a>, which is very challenging to find in bridal,\u201d DeYandr\u00e9 says of her gown. \u201cMy everyday style is quirky and colorful; I love thrifting and pattern mixing.\u201d When she saw Rara Avis\u2019 Lily<\/a> gown on display at Belle Atelier<\/a>, she made a beeline toward it. \u201cNot only was it colorful, but it was decorated with texture, clay flowers, and embroidery. The fabric<\/a> is printed with branches and birds. I\u2019m a Gemini, an air sign. The dress was both airy and earthy. It belonged with me at my urban farm wedding.\u201d\n<\/p>\n \nThe bridal salon<\/a> has its own in-house atelier, and the team shortened the front of the gown for a subtle high-low draping to accommodate DeYandr\u00e9\u2019s five-foot-two frame. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to drown in a big gown. The results were perfect,\u201d she says. Plus, \u201cRara Avis means \u2018rare bird,\u2019 which I definitely identify with. Imagine the heart-eye emoji in real life.\u201d\n<\/p>\n \nTheir joyful glow was natural\u2014mostly. \u201cIf our skin was glowing it could be due to our nalagu<\/em> ceremony,\u201d DeYandr\u00e9 says. \u201cTwo days before our wedding<\/a>, Vishal\u2019s mom hosted a nalagu<\/em>, also known as a haldi or turmeric ceremony. The ceremony prepares the couple physically and spiritually<\/a> for their new life in marriage. Gemini is associated with The Lovers card in tarot. Chocolate Gemini quickly became the foundation of the wedding, including our website<\/a> name.\u201d She goes on: \u201cWe love our community. Since we celebrated virtually with the majority of our loved ones, we were very intentional with our website<\/a>. It was funny and sweet being all dressed up piling into our everyday car<\/a> as if we were about to run errands. My dress consumed the front seat. The ceremony<\/a> itself was impactful and emotional. \u201cThe contributions from our friends and family were remarkable,\u201d DeYandr\u00e9 shares. \u201cMy 90-year-old grandmother traveled to Chicago<\/a> for the wedding and read her late sister\u2019s favorite poem<\/a>. Our dear friend Kate not only married us, but brought us laughter and calm at the altar. Family and friends around the world who joined virtually sent love in the livestream<\/a> chat. I wanted something unique for DeYandr\u00e9! Ultimately I worked with Digby & Iona<\/a> in Brooklyn for the perfect Sri Lankan purple and blue sapphire<\/a> engagement ring. I surprised her with it and she absolutely loved it!\u201d\n<\/p>\n Photo by Emily Melissa Photo<\/p>\n <\/span> \n\u201cIn Indian tradition<\/a>, a mangala sutra<\/em> or thaali<\/em> is a necklace adorned by the bride on their wedding day,\u201d DeYandr\u00e9 says. \u201cThe thread used to create the necklace<\/a> is made by dying white string in turmeric, giving it a rich yellow hue. We chose to create our own take on a thaali<\/em> by braiding three pieces of string together and adding a more traditional jewelry<\/a> clasp to keep it in place. There is a 22-carat gold<\/a> pendant that was gifted to us by Vishal\u2019s mother. Vishal dyed the strands in turmeric and my maid of honor, Meghan, was able to create the necklace in an afternoon.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n Photo by Emily Melissa Photo<\/p>\n <\/span> \nAnother tradition in Indian weddings<\/a> is the draping of colorful garlands, or varmala. \u201c<\/em>The tradition is believed to have originated from Hindu<\/a> gods and goddesses,\u201d Vishal explains. \u201cThe bride would place the varmala on her chosen groom. A bride and groom would jump the broom publicly to honor their commitment. Today, it represents great joy and honors ancestral heritage<\/a>. It symbolizes the sweeping away of negative energy while making way for all the good to come.\u201d\n<\/p>\n \nThe bride\u2019s mother decorated the broom they used for the rite. \u201cShe wrapped African-printed fabric<\/a> around the handle and tied it with a bow<\/a> near the bristles. Cowrie shells, beads, appliqu\u00e9, and artificial flowers adorned the broom,” explains the bride. “The artificial flowers allow us to display the broom in our home for years to come.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n Photo by Emily Melissa Photo<\/p>\n <\/span> \nWhile more than 100 friends and family members tuned in virtually, the couple hosted just 24 guests in person. \u201cLike most things during the pandemic<\/a>, many of our decisions changed as restrictions were updated\u201d they share. \u201cAt first, we expected to get married at a courthouse<\/a>, just us. By February, we decided to take the leap and plan for our immediate family to attend, about 16 people. By April, we felt comfortable extending up to the venue limit of 24. We didn\u2019t want to delay the joy of getting married. He made this!\u2019 The rug sits in our living room where we shared our first look. We requested that everyone wear color<\/a> and avoid black.\u201d The results were impeccable. \u201cEveryone looked amazing! A few people pulled quirky pieces out of their closet that they hadn\u2019t had the opportunity to wear yet. We merely needed to bring ourselves.\u201d For decor, \u201cWe asked Sabrina to incorporate flowers that were in season<\/a> and have fun. She created a lush tablescape with airy blooms styled with pillar candles. She provided a bright, colorful mix of magenta, hot pink, and orange with pops of neutrals<\/a>, pastel blue, and lavender.\u201d\n<\/p>\n \nDeYandr\u00e9 continues: \u201cFrench industrial chairs wrapped around the large farm table; bistro lights and cream linen<\/a> swag draped the pergola. Gold flatware was paired with classic glassware, wicker chargers, and saffron shantung napkins<\/a> in a knot fold.\u201d Custom menus featured their gemini logo.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
