Insider has verified her identity and income from the apps with documentation. The following has been edited for length and clarity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve always been more of a person to buy things of quality that I know I will wear multiple times and that will last. That&#8217;s a very French mentality. Craft and quality are important.<\/p>\n<p>Now, every time I buy something new, I&#8217;ll put it straight on an app after I take a few photos. I&#8217;ve noticed that when I post photos of me in London or the park on the app and my Instagram (@<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dutempsetdesreves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">dutempsetdesreves<\/a>), they do better than if I just take photos of the item off the website.<\/p>\n<p>Using the apps is super easy. It takes two minutes per item; 20 minutes total. All you have to do is upload the photos, put the value of the item in and the app will tell you roughly what they recommend the daily rental price would be.<\/p>\n<p>I usually just select the recommended amount, then I choose the minimum rental period that I want (usually two or three days, depending on the item). I decided to subsidize the cost of shipping to make it more affordable to rent my items. I could get the post office to ship my items for less, but I prefer to use the highest and most expensive service which is tracked, insured and guaranteed to arrive the next day before 1 p.m. For last-minute rentals, I also give people the option to come pick it up.<\/p>\n<p>ByRotation also offers managed rentals, where they take care of postage and cleaning, but they take a bigger commission. However, I don&#8217;t have them manage my items, so they take a 15% commission.<\/p>\n<p>I have a spreadsheet with all of the numbers and the amount of times I&#8217;ve rented each item because I need to keep track across all the platforms. Every month, it&#8217;s a considerable amount of money. My combined earnings across the different apps is over \u00a318,300, or about $22,000, since I began renting my clothes out during the pandemic..<\/p>\n<p>Before getting married, I was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/personal-finance\/best-high-yield-savings-accounts-rates-right-now\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">putting my rental income aside<\/a> to buy my wedding looks. I wanted to wear something quite simple, so I bought a slip camisole dress from Anine Bing. It was a pleasure to wear, cost $349.25 AUD, or $233, and I&#8217;ve rented it multiple times already, including to someone who wanted the dress for her wedding.<\/p>\n<p>When she sent me the photos, I was so touched that I could be part of the best day of someone&#8217;s life. She looked beautiful in the dress.<\/p>\n<p>After Covid restrictions eased, I had a weekend of celebrations with a pool party, rehearsal dinner, and ceremony in Sicily for my proper wedding. Two weeks after the wedding, I posted the Dolce &amp; Gabbana dresses I wore for my rehearsal dinner and pool party on the app and got a request for them right away.<\/p>\n<p>I even put the Dolce &amp; Gabbana earrings I wore for my wedding on the app. Those rent really well. Any sort of accessory works: I rent belts, earrings, brooches. People don&#8217;t necessarily want to invest in those pieces and it&#8217;s usually quite affordable to rent accessories. My mom is into fashion and she gave me her vintage Chanel metal belt from the 80s or 90s a few years ago. I put it on ByRotation and it was worn by a famous influencer in London for a photo shoot. It&#8217;s been rented four times for a total of \u00a3114.05, or about $138.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fashion_rental_apps_have_changed_the_way_I_buy_clothes\"><\/span>Fashion rental apps have changed the way I buy clothes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s definitely changed the way that I buy. Now if I see an item that I want, I think: Is this suitable for rental? Can I recoup my investment? I&#8217;ll buy things that I know I can rent.<\/p>\n<p>Dresses work best and rent out the most, especially brands like Jacquemus, Cult Gaia, and brands I don&#8217;t wear personally, like The Vampire&#8217;s Wife and Rixo \u2014 trendy British brands which have pieces people would wear to an event only once.<\/p>\n<p>I have a yellow Jacquemus dress which was rented 30 times, for a total of \u00a31,651.71, or about $2,000. I paid \u00a3729 for it, or about $887.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the most popular dresses that I rent the most, I own in two different sizes, so they get rented even more. My items range from sizes six to 10. If you&#8217;re new to the app, as part of the onboarding, they&#8217;ll suggest you can follow certain lenders who are your size.<\/p>\n<p>In the summer, I rent a lot of dresses, and in the winter my ski things get rented all of the time, so those are the busiest months. I have a jumpsuit from Chanel that I found secondhand on Depop. I got a great deal on that and it gets rented out every week in the winter months.<\/p>\n<p>You can chat on apps like ByRotation. Most of the time, people will ask questions about the fit or length of a dress. I love the community aspect of this app, because you get to meet like-minded, sustainably minded women. It&#8217;s great.
