An award-winning Sunshine Coast hinterland wedding venue owned by a prominent businessman and diplomat has been revealed as the site for a new 38-room short stay development.<\/p>\n

\n

A material change of use application for 894 Landsborough Maleny Rd, Bald Knob, was lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council on May 24 and proposes a 38-unit short-stay accommodation less than 50m away from the iconic Maleny Manor.<\/p>\n

\n

The application is yet to be approved by the council.<\/p>\n

The stunning property is owned by Presidential Capital Pty Ltd, directed by Brisbane-based John Anderson.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s sole shareholder is Geoffrey Thomas AO, a prominent businessman and diplomat.<\/p>\n

Mr Thomas, who now lives in the United States, has held a number of government, political, and non-profit sector positions through his career.<\/p>\n

The Geoffrey Thomas Family Trust was named in publicly available documents as the applicants behind the proposal. They declined to comment.<\/p>\n

The documents state the development includes 35 one-bedroom units, all with their own ensuites. Nine of these units include their own kitchenette.<\/p>\n

The remaining three units include two bedrooms, larger kitchenettes and lounge areas. A two-bedroom manager\u2019s residence is on-site also.<\/p>\n

All units include a balcony facing northeast with \u201csignificant views\u201d, the documents state.<\/p>\n

A two-storey reception and dining building is proposed for the front of the development and includes a manager\u2019s office, meeting room and recreation terrace, the documents state. <\/p>\n

The second level includes a bar, a guest dining area, a reception office and foyer and an upper and lower terrace.<\/p>\n

Several golf carts will be parked onsite, building design plans state, with easy access to the units.<\/p>\n

The development comes amid an increasing demand for accommodation in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, the documents state, and will encourage people to stay and explore the area while cementing the hinterland as a destination.<\/p>\n

The Maleny Manor was listed for sale in 2017 after Mr Thomas had owned it for 23 years<\/a>, but there is no public record of the property being sold.<\/p>\n

The Manor was named Australia\u2019s number one Reception Venue in 2016 and Australia\u2019s number one Ceremony Venue in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017 at the Australian Bridal Industry Academy Awards.<\/p>\n
