This Foodie Couple’s Intimate Restaurant Wedding Was the Sweetest Party

Yuxi Chen and Kevin Le met while interning at the same company while they were both studying at the University of Toronto. After hanging out at a work event, Yuxi and Kevin became fast friends. Yuxi describes those early days of their secret work romance as a classic game of cat and mouse, with one chasing the other. They kept in touch after their internships wrapped; over the course of the next year, they had more than a few “just friends” dinner dates in Toronto.

This was back in the early 2010s. “It was an exciting time for the Toronto food scene, which made for great excuses for us to meet up and explore new spots,” says Yuxi. “Our restaurant meet-ups became increasingly more frequent, and organically morphed into us formally dating.”

Over the course of seven years, this foodie couple’s relationship blossomed and they became an inseparable duo. Kevin proposed during the pandemic in the fall of 2021. Yuxi describes the proposal as a private and incredibly special moment between just the two of them. They quickly got to work on planning their dream day for June of 2022: a micro wedding, fittingly held at a restaurant they both loved.

“We wanted to host our wedding at an intimate restaurant in the city,” says Yuxi. “We didn’t have a particular style in mind for our wedding, so we looked for spaces with an interesting interior and open-plan layout. We had been to Favourites Thai BBQ + Wine a few times and we loved the food as well as the space—it has a very laid-back and stylish vibe.”

Since the venue was already colourful, the couple was mindful of keeping their decor elements simple, so as not to take away from the space and design of it,” says Yuxi. The couple used the peachy pink colour palette as the inspiration for their stationery, dinner plates and florals. “The flowers had accents of orange and pink, which tied into the colours of the terrazzo floor and popped against the green marble tabletops,” says Yuxi.

The couple hosted 40 guests for their wedding, a joyful and relaxed day brimming with great food, their favourite people and amazing tunes. Yoomin, a good friend of Kevin’s officiated the wedding. “Yoomin had actually done a few weddings prior to ours, so we loved to have him as part of our day,” says Yuxi. “Since he’s known the two of us for many years, he was able to make the ceremony fun, light-hearted and sentimental.”

The couple’s choice of having a friend as their wedding officiant reflected their wish to keep their wedding day highly personal. Many of the details for their day were DIY. Yuxi arranged the flowers; Kevin built the pedestal displays for the main floral arrangements, which were housed in two of the couple’s own large serving bowls. He also played DJ for the night, a job he started several months before the wedding.

“Kevin began compiling a playlist of love-themed songs, which he then arranged to match the progression of our wedding, from guest arrival all the way through to some late-night dancing,” says Yuxi. “Our taste in music is broad, from retro soul and R&B to Japanese city pop. Everything worked together so well and was an ultra-special touch. We love listening to that playlist to relive the memories!”

The dress

“I wore the Ginny dress from Reformation—it was one I had been eyeing for a while,” says Yuxi. “My sister-in-law happened to find it at VSP Consignment, brand-new with the tag still on it and in my size!” The breezy puff-sleeve midi dress was the perfect choice for the couple’s intimate late spring wedding day.

“A friend was able to help us source the florals at wholesale price, and I put the arrangements together the day before with the help of another good friend,” says Yuxi. “It was a bit stressful, but I loved how they turned out, and it saved us a ton of money. We used two large serving bowls to hold the main arrangements and a few other vases from our home for arrangements by the bar.”

Time with family and friends

“Since our wedding was such an intimate one, we were able to spend quality time with every single one of our guests,” says Yuxi. “Most people at the wedding also knew one another either through us or other friends of friends, it genuinely felt like a giant family gathering. Due to COVID, some of our family members from Asia couldn’t attend the wedding. This factor made our decision to proceed with our wedding a difficult one, but we hopped on FaceTime calls with as many as we could during our day (in spite of the time difference!) to share the memories.”
