‘Affordable’ new photography studio proving a big hit in city
An experienced photographer has opened up about how business is busy at her new studio in Mapperley. From working with the likes of Fearne Cotton and brands such as Boots and Wilko, Jess Rigley Portraits is on 894B Woodborough Road – building that formerly housed offices.
Jess has 13 years of experience in photography. Local to Mapperley, she specialises in newborn shoots, family shoots, cake smashes, maternity, and wedding photography.
With the cost of living crisis, photoshoots aren’t necessarily a priority for a lot of people – and Jess previously didn’t know if the studio would work out. However, with the power of social media, she’s been inundated with clients and opportunities.

In a studio filled with colourful props and adjustable sets, Jess trialed having a studio elsewhere in Nottingham before getting her studio in Mapperley. She wanted to see if it would be well-received by customers – and it certainly has been.
She said: “Because of the cost of living, I have been very aware of my prices and wanted to keep things affordable. I think it’s a lot more affordable because I’m doing this for the love of it and I get things are very tight right now.
“The best part of my job is doing weddings and newborn shoots. At weddings, you meet some characters, whether it’s a micro-wedding or a huge one.
“I love it and with newborns, the cuddles are the best and meeting new parents. I get a few teary first-time parents, I always want to make sure both the baby and parents are happy.
“Luckily, I’ve never had an unhappy baby.”
A newborn shoot is priced at £165, a cake smash is £95, maternity shoots are £95 and family shoots are £75.
Jess added: “People can book sessions and then I’ll go through what kind of style they want, I always want to make sure people are happy.”
Right now, bohemian and minimalist styles are popular. Jess studied at New College Nottingham and then went on to do a degree in Gloucester in Fashion and Advertising.
She continued: “I’ve gone into intensive care before to do a minimal set with a baby and that was very delicate, that was one of my favourite shoots. One of my favourite weddings was two guys who got married at Wollaton Hall.
“One of them was a designer and they designed the bridesmaid dresses which were phenomenal.”
