This Couple’s Bridgerton-Vibes Wedding Was Simply Stunning

Though Claudia Labelle and Alexander Campbell didn’t start dating until May of 2018, the beginnings of their coupledom started four years prior to their first date. They were set up by their mutual friend Anastasia, who Alex had known since primary school, and Claudia met at work. “In the summer of 2014 Anastasia told me she knew the perfect guy for me,” says Claudia. “He was about to move to France for his master’s degree, though, and as I had previously been in a long-distance relationship, I didn’t want to pursue another one. I told her if he’s single when he returns to Montreal, I’d be happy to meet him then!”

Alexander did return, was indeed single, and Anastasia then played matchmaker for her two friends. “I had just come back from a business trip to New York when I received a text from Ana that Alex was back from France,” says Claudia. “He had tickets to a play the following day, and thought of inviting me,” says Claudia. “I said yes, and we met at the restaurant Philémon Bar in Old Montreal before the play. We shared some wine and food, and then headed over to Theatre Centaur to watch the most amazing adaptation of Michel Tremblay’s Hosanna. It was the perfect date.”

“There is a pretty wooded area behind my parents home that was so incredibly perfect for wedding photos,” says Claudia. Photo: Geneviève Giguère Photography.

Claudia says from the night of their first date onwards, their relationship quickly, and beautifully evolved. “We always followed our hearts and openly talked about us and our plans together,” she says. After six months, Alex and his dog, Flora, moved in with Claudia; two years later, Alex proposed after a quiet river kayak and picnic lunch at a waterfall; and a year after that, they said ‘I do,’ in September 2021.

Montreal florist Prunes Les Fleurs created the florals for their day. “The arrangements were very romantic and rustic, and there were some gorgeous touches of colours in my bouquet that I especially loved,” says Claudia. Photo: Geneviève Giguère Photography

Though they were married in the micro-wedding era, an intimate celebration with just parents, siblings and closest friends was always the wedding plan for the couple—they hosted just 35 guests. The venue was Claudia’s parents’ backyard, which they gave a dreamy garden-party setting. “The set-up of our party was a very special moment for us,” says Claudia. “We were both very involved in the planning from the beginning, and we had a specific vision in mind.”

The colour palette for the day was soft and warm, with accents of off-white, green and pops of pastel blue and pink. The vibe was luxe, romantic and rustic, with touches of dark wood providing contrast to the softness of the flowers and decor. “Truth be told, my dress was really the inspiration for the look and feel of the day,” says Claudia. “I bought it a month after the proposal and was totally inspired by the Regency-era stylings of it. The empire waistline and delicate floral print of my dress was totally Bridgeton-worthy!”

Their ceremony was officiated by Claudia’s best friend of more than 20 years, and the couple were married in a small park just behind Claudia’s parents’ home. “In the lead-up to our wedding, we talked a lot about what the most important element of the day was for us, and it was our vow exchange,” says Claudia. “A wedding lasts a day, but a marriage lasts a lifetime; that moment is the purest expression of our deep love and commitment for each other, shared in front of the people we love most.”

“We spent nearly half of our relationship in the context of the pandemic,” says Claudia. “And while this isn’t an easy situation to navigate, it truly brought us closer. we share the same values and fondly cherish our relationship.” Photo: Geneviève Giguère Photography

Another part of their wedding celebration that was super important to the couple: fantastic food and wine. As avid home cooks and restaurant-goers, Claudia said it was critical that their guests enjoy a delicious meal and drink amazing wine at their party. “We opted for a cocktail reception because we wanted it to be different and festive-feeling,” says Claudia. “There was no formal seating, but enough seating for everyone to sit down and enjoy their meal. Alex is the co-founder of a private wine importation company called Deux Caves, so we had access to organic wines from France, Spain and Italy. Our caterer was also a friend and absolutely brought our vision to life! We hear from so many guests afterwards how incredible our menu was—we totally accomplished our foodie mission!”

The Dress

“My dress was a reflection of our romantic, vintage-rustic wedding style,” says Claudia. “The wedding dress I chose wasn’t white, and it made quite a statement! I loved how classic, elegant and romantic it was. It was the exact vision I had for our wedding day. As I love shopping online, it made sense to be looking for ‘the one’ online, rather than going wedding dress shopping, which was also not possible because of COVID. My dress was the first and only dress I ever tried on, and it was love at first try!”

The Cake

“When it came to wedding planning, we were both on the same page for absolutely everything—except the cake,” says Claudia. “At first, we didn’t care much about even having cake, and then, for some reason, it became Alex’s passion project and absolute obsession! He started drawing cake mock-ups, figuring how big each tier would be, what flavour combination to go for. We wanted to wow our guests with something they had never tasted before. Megan Adshade, an extremely talented baker and nutrition coach made our vision happen—a two-tier pistachio naked cake with plum and fig compote, an alternate ganache and ricotta filling, and a pistachio praline base.”

The First Look

“There was something heartwarming and so special in seeing each other alone, sharing this instant and taking it all in together. Everyone told us to try to fully enjoy the wedding and not to be so stuck in our head. And the first look truly made us live in the moment and made us feel even more excited to celebrate with our friends and family.”
