Omaha couple plans micro wedding to fit them: ‘Don’t be afraid to step away from tradition’

Jacob Phillips and Allyson Doerr weren’t interested in a large traditional wedding. Instead, they decided on a micro event.

They styled their big day into a mix they call “eclectic wildflower dinner party.”

“We wanted to have a small, intimate day that was very personal to us both,” Doerr said. “We both grew up in different faiths, so it also didn’t make sense for us to have a strictly religious ceremony. A family friend was our officiant, and she gave us a perfect mix of both our traditions. We had just 35 guests (including our two wedding party members).”

Because they did a micro wedding, the couple chose not to do a rehearsal dinner with family. Instead, they went on a date the night before at V. Mertz and had an incredible dinner together, they said.

They ended the night at Ted and Wally’s, which features Allyson’s favorite strawberry ice cream.

“It was the perfect way to have time to be together to appreciate the special weekend one-on-one,” Doerr said.

They also added several personal touches to their ceremony, including string quartet versions of songs from “The Lord of the Rings,” “Harry Potter,” “Star Wars” and “Jurassic Park” they found on Apple Music. Their recessional was the theme song from “The Office.”

They had a small cake just for them while offering a variety of desserts for their guests. They used Chelsie Schroeder from The Bubbly Tart as their baker.

“We wanted to have a dessert table that reflected some of our favorite things instead of a color scheme,” Doerr said. “We had cupcakes decorated like our huskies, cake pops that were decorated in Harry Potter themed colors, treacle tarts and cookies in our favorite flavors.”

Instead of a dance at the reception, they chose to end the night with a family game night.

They did a fun trivia game of questions about them and their dogs. They also played Family Feud and the Newlywed Game.

The following weekend, they had a Happily Ever After party that included extended family and friends to celebrate their marriage. They held it at Sips on 10th, which offered indoor and outdoor space with a great menu and a modern vibe that’s one of their favorite places to visit.

“We chose to do a micro wedding with just our family so we would be able to feel like we had meaningful time with each of them the day of the wedding,” Doerr said. “Don’t be afraid to step away from tradition. Make the day about you and your partner. Every last detail of our wedding from my pink dress, the florals, the taco buffet and the reception were all personalized to fit our style. We had a lot of fun doing a nontraditional wedding. It was a fun day for both us and our guests.”

This blind date worked

The two met in 2017 after being set up by Jacob’s father.

“I worked with his dad at the time and he mentioned that he had a son close to my age. I hadn’t ever gone on a blind date before, so it took some prompting, but it was the best decision I’ve ever made so far,” Doerr said.

Phillips proposed seven years later, while on a hike in Omaha with their three huskies.

He asked Doerr to grab his sunglasses from his backpack and she was surprised to find a ring case instead.

“Our dogs are very important to us, and the fact that they were there when it happened made it extra special to me,” Doerr said.

DIY wedding

The pair made many of their decorations.

Phillips built their chuppah (wedding canopy) that was then decorated with flowers, including some from their home.

They made a signature drink menu that included three drinks named after their huskies.

“I crocheted our card basket with yarns that were gifted to me by Jacob’s mother,” Doerr said. “As party favors I gave away seeds I had collected from my flower gardens.”

Gamble works

Nebraska was playing Colorado on Sept. 7, so they found an open date to hold their ceremony in the backyard courtyard of Lucile’s Old Market.

They gambled with the weather, but it turned out perfect.

“I had asked guests to shut off their phones so we wouldn’t be interrupted by phone calls or emergency alert tones, but about midway a car alarm started,” Doerr said. “We waited for a minute for it to stop. It made us laugh as our officiant was able to continue on with her message that was ironically discussing the importance of patience and forgiveness in married life.

When it was Doerr’s time to answer the questions about making Phillips her husband, she hurriedly answered “I will” before it was her turn to speak.

“When it was Jacob’s turn he bailed me out by purposely answering ‘I will’ in the exact same incorrect spot that I did,” Doerr said.

The Omaha couple wanted to make sure their dogs were part of their big day. The dogs are Maximus, Archie and Poppy.

Their huskies (Maximus, Archie, and Poppy) also got to join them for photos before the ceremony after a friend brought them to the Old Market.

“They were excited to see us and we got some really special footage of our little family in our wedding best — dog bowties included,” Doerr said.

House help

They didn’t have a specific gift registry since they both had their own complete households when they first got together.

They had a cash fund instead so they can do house projects such as improving their driveway or remodeling their ‘90s kitchen.

“But the most sentimental gift was a surprise from my aunt,” Doerr said. “My grandmother was unable to travel to be at the wedding, so my aunt gave me a handkerchief that belonged to my grandmother so she was there in spirit.”

Fantastic flowers

Doerr told lead designer Sarah Pflug at Bouquet Omaha that she is a native Nebraska wildflower gardener and she was hoping to be able to incorporate both Nebraska and Midwest native florals and grasses into her arrangements.

They had a fun outing to Flatland Floral Collective, a floral wholesaler in Omaha, to pick out flowers from local farmers. She also supplied Nebraska native flowers from the gardens of her and her mom.

Her father works for Mulhall’s and she was also able to add some of the wild sunflowers, flowers and grasses from the bee garden in their growing yards.

Allyson Doerr and Jacob Phillips exchange vows. They held their big day at Lucile’s Old Market.

“Sarah and her team put together the most beautiful wildflower arrangements for our wedding canopy, the centerpieces and the bouquets. My personal bouquet was made up of mostly florals from my garden and Jacob’s boutonnière included a coneflower from our home,” Doerr said.

“I’m really proud with how it turned out. It was an ode to Nebraska and my passion for native gardening. It was a fun way to add education about the importance of gardening for native pollinators and how native plants can be just as beautiful as nonnatives.”

Different reveal, too

When getting ready for the wedding, they chose to do it together.

“We were still able to do a dress reveal, but it was a special moment for Jacob to button my dress and help me put on my boots. I tried to help him tie his tie,” Doerr said. “We have been together for so long and often help each other pick out outfits for events, so it made sense for us to do the same on our wedding day.”

They helped each other get ready for their wedding.

As a nurse anesthetist, Doerr says she spends most of her days wearing scrubs and sweatpants, so it was really fun to have a beautiful gown. She’s a longtime follower of the designer Rue de Seine and they had a pink bohemian style gown that fit her personality.

“Because we chose to do a micro wedding we were able to save money to put toward elements that were most important to us like the photography and florals,” Doerr said. “Overall, we stayed well below what all the average costs are for standard weddings.”

Building something together

Doerr said her husband is kind, thoughtful and supportive of her many interests. He was open to her ideas of a nontraditional wedding and went along with all of her wild suggestions.

“He is handy and built us a beautiful wedding canopy for me to design with florals. It was very symbolic of us building our home together,” Doerr said.

He said Doerr is thoughtful, generous, determined and gets very passionate about her interests.

“It was no surprise that when it came to planning our wedding, she took control and went all in, planning every last, perfect detail on her own,” he said. “And she delivered.”
